This weekend marks one year since the official opening of CucubaNación, my art space in Mayagüez. CucubaNación was conceived in the bioluminescent waters of Vieques and born from the darkness illuminated by cucubanos and fireflies following Hurricane María. It started as a paint series with the 2018 mural of the same name on Calle San Vicente in Mayagüez Pueblo. Contemplating the imposed darkness of climate change, incessant power outages and colonialism, it is a meditation on Boricua bioluminescence and its liberatory lessons in light. In 2022, the concept expanded into a store-front art space directly across from the mural on Calle San Vicente. In addition to being my intimate studio, gallery, art shop, it also serves as a community space that has hosted art classes, workshops, healing spaces, creative circles, and conversations on self-healing, rematriation and liberation.
We will celebrate this first anniversary with:
-A presentation on memories of the past year
-An open studio/ preview of the Rematriating Borikén portrait series in process.
-An art sale with prints and more
-Music y jangueo
CucubaNación also serves as host to my Rematriating Borikén project. We have held several gatherings for folks on the rematriation journey. We continue one-on-one interviews and photo shoots in the space in preparation for the portrait series visibilizing those who have chosen to return/ reclaim their ancestral essence here on the archipelago of Borikén. The painting series was supported this year by a NALAC Fund for the Arts Grant and will debut in the spring of 2024. Stay tuned for more on that project at rematriatingboriken.com.
In closing this update, I affirm that my art and activism have always been centered on the liberation of all people. Rooting my work in rematriation and liberation, I honor the global birthright to justice, peace, and freedom. I do not support the displacement, oppression, or genocide of any people, nor the erasure of people and nations off maps. I work towards humanity’s collective ascent to a place of love and liberation for every human being on this Earth. With my work I choose light as both metaphor and strategy towards visioning and building such a world for ourselves and future generations. This is my role as an artist and human.

Este fin de semana se cumple un año desde la inauguración oficial de CucubaNación, mi espacio artístico en Mayagüez. CucubaNación fue concebida en las aguas bioluminiscentes de Vieques y nació de la oscuridad iluminada por cucubanos y luciérnagas tras el huracán María. Comenzó como una serie de pintura con el mural del mismo nombre del 2018 en la calle San Vicente en Mayagüez Pueblo. Contemplando la oscuridad impuesta por el cambio climático, los incesantes apagones y el colonialismo, es una meditación sobre las lecciones libertarias de la bioluminiscencia boricua. En 2022, el concepto se expandió en un local justo enfrente del mural en la calle San Vicente. Además de ser mi estudio íntimo, galería, tienda de arte, también sirve como un espacio comunitario donde se ofrecen clases de arte, talleres, espacios sanativos, círculos creativos y conversaciones sobre la auto-sanación, la rematriación y la liberación.

-Un estudio abierto / "preview" de la serie de retratos en proceso, Rematriating Borikén
-Venta de arte con afiches y más

Dentro de CucubaNación también se encuentra el proyecto Rematriating Borikén. Hemos tenidos varios encuentros entre personas comprometidas al retorno y el reclamo de nuestra esencia autentica en este archipiélago/ matriz ancestral. Continuamos con las entrevistas individuales y las sesiones de fotos en el espacio en preparación para la serie de retratos que visibilizarán a aquelles comprometides a la rematriación. La serie de arte recibió una beca del Fondo de la Artes de NALAC (Asociación Nacional Para las Artes y La Cultura Latina). La serie estrenará en mayo del 2024. Para terminar, afirmo que mi arte y activismo siempre han estado centrados en la liberación de todas personas. Enraizando mi trabajo en la rematriación y la liberación, honro el derecho de nacimiento global a la justicia, la paz y la libertad. No apoyo el desplazamiento, la opresión ni el genocidio de ningún pueblo, ni la eliminación de personas y naciones de los mapas. Trabajo por el ascenso colectivo de la humanidad a un lugar de amor y liberación para cada ser humano en este planeta. Con mi trabajo elijo la luz como metáfora y estrategia para imaginar y construir ese mundo para nosotros y futuras generaciones. Esta es mi misión como artista y ser humano.
