July 6th, 2021 marked ten years since we unveiled the Soldaderas mural of Frida Kahlo and Julia de Burgos in the Modesto "Tin" Flores Community Garden in el Barrio/ East Harlem. For this occasion, Quemoción asked me to respond to a series of questions regarding the mural and these two powerful ancestras, Julia y Frida.
I would like to thank Quemoción as well as photographers Joe Conzo, Francisco Reyes II, Javier Soriano, Xen Medina, Marina Ortiz and Claudia Plaza for the images of the mural and the unveiling. From Quemoción: This month marks the 10th year anniversary of the #Soldaderas mural by Yasmin Hernandez Art. Yasmín herself takes us on a journey by sharing what she admires about Frida Kahlo and Julia de Burgos, her artistic journey, why she sees art as a way to combat colonization, and what it means to be a Soldadera.
