David: Cemí, Hand-enhanced detail
Ink, acrylic paint, ink jet on watercolor paper
10 x 9 inches

This enhanced, hand-painted portrait detail started with a print of my original 2009 painting “David: Cemí”. David Sanes Rodríguez was a civilian guard in Vieques who was killed when a US military pilot missed his target, dropping two 500-pound bombs near the Observation Point where he worked. He was killed on April 19, 1999. This series, the first of my bioluminescent paintings, depicted Vieques ancestors painted in a palette inspired by its famed-bioluminescent bay. Proceeds will go to a relative of David in Vieques.

Black Backgrounds have been part of my creative practice since 2009 in honor of Vieques’ bioluminescent bay and that took on new meaning after living through Hurricanes Irma and Maria and their dark aftermath.
