This small canvas includes a collaged print from an original painting of Pedro Albizu Campos with the background painted in red, black and green, anchoring Puerto Rico’s place in the black liberation struggle. Born the grandson of an enslaved woman in Ponce, Puerto Rico, Albizu rose to speak seven languages, graduated from Harvard Law, and waged a fierce, life-long battle against US imperialism. He died on April 21, 1965 from cancer resulting from radiation torture while a political prisoner of the US.

Yasmin Hernandez is a Brooklyn-born and raised artist whose work is centered on liberation themes. She rematriated to her ancestral homeland of Borikén in 2014, where she is still based.
