Yasmin Hernandez Art
Atabey Karaya, 2014
Handmade magnet on wood with archival print, acrylic and ink
This handpainted magnet includes a detail of my 2014 Atabey Karaya painting, which now hangs at CucubaNación, my Mayaguez artspace. This painting was the last I made in New York before my move to Borikén and was a meditation on rematriation and my own rebirth.
Black Backgrounds have been part of my creative practice since 2009 in honor of Vieques’ bioluminescent bay and that took on new meaning after living through Hurricanes Irma and Maria and their dark aftermath.
Yasmin Hernandez is a Brooklyn-born and raised artist whose work is centered on liberation and rematriation themes. She moved to her ancestral homeland of Borikén in 2014, where she is still based.
