Las manos sanativas de Betances/ Betances’ Healing Hands

Además de ser revolucionario, autor del Grito de Lares, diseñador de nuestra primera bandera, abolicionista, Betances fue médico. Trabajó la epidémica del cólera en Puerto Rico y ayudó con otras enfermedades por varias islas del caribe y en Paris. Cuando pinté este tributo en el 2018, envisioné a Betances iluminando a Puerto Rico y sus islas hermanas antillanas que permanecían oscuras tras el paso de los huracanes Irma y María. Azules aguas bioluminiscentes fluyen de sus manos iluminándonos con su fluido universal. Hoy, día de su natalicio, en estos tiempos del coronavirus, pido que el espíritu de Betances nos dirige ese mismo fluido sanativo que tan generosamente distribuía por su tierra natal, Aytí, la República Dominicana, Cuba, Paris y más. Y que nos despierte la consciencia a todes a entender que la sanación completar va mano en mano con la liberación verdadera. Gracias a la Jornada de Betances en Cabo Rojo por mantener vivo siempre su legado. (Esta pieza, su paleta y el concepto de pintar a nuestres ancestres en los colores de nuestras aguas bioluminiscentes me nace en Vieques en el 2009, isla mágica que me inspira siempre.)
In addition to being the author of the Grito de Lares revolution, designer of our first flag, an abolitionist, Betances was a doctor. He worked on the cholera epidemic in Puerto Rico and helped with other diseases on several Caribbean islands and in Paris. When I painted this tribute in 2018, I envisioned Betances illuminating Puerto Rico and its Antillean sister islands that remained dark after Hurricanes Irma and Maria. Blue bioluminescent waters flow from his hands illuminating us with his universal fluid. Today, on his birthday, and in these times of the coronavirus, I ask the spirit of Betances to channel that same healing fluid that he so generously distributed throughout his homeland, Haiti, the Dominican Republic, Cuba, Paris and more. Let us collectively awaken to the knowledge that complete healing goes hand in hand with true liberation. Gratitude to the Jornada de Betances in Cabo Rojo for keeping his legacy alive always!
