La Transmutación del Alma, Remix, 2019
Collaged print, metallic paint, ink on black mat board
5 x 7

Remix of my 2016 artwork "La Transmutación del Alma" featuring Puerto Rican liberation heroes Pedro Albizu Campos and Laura Meneses. Known as the father of Puerto Rican Nationalism, Albizu met his love, Laura, at Harvard University where the two studied. She was a scientist from Peru. This image is a digital montage of the two juxtaposed with images of their family, a red and blue nebula and excerpts of his 1936 letters to his daughters from la Princesa Prison where he was being held as a political prisoner. The title comes from a quote in one of the letters:

Que misterio encierra el agua que Dios la escogió como elemento para la transmutación del alma?

(What mystery does water hold that God would choose it as the element for the transmutation of the soul?)

Remixes are intimate alternatives to the usual print reproduction as each one is enhanced and remixed to create a new, unique, original work of art combining collage, color pencil, ink, acrylic paint, or other materials.

Black Backgrounds have been part of my creative practice since 2009 in honor of Vieques’ bioluminescent bay and took on new meaning after living through Hurricanes Irma and Maria and their dark aftermath.
