Bandera Boricua Luciernaga (Firefly-inspired flag), 2019
Colored pencil on black paper
6x9 inches (unmatted/ unframed)

Original colored pencil drawing on black paper. This Puerto Rican flag is inspired by my artwork exploring bioluminescence. In this case I use the colors of the common firefly, red, black and yellow, with a green glow.  Poetically, these are the same colors of African liberation, honoring our place in the African Diaspora.

Black Backgrounds:
Working on black backgrounds is something I began in 2009 in honor of Vieques’ bioluminescent bay and that took on new meaning after living through Hurricanes Irma and Maria and their dark aftermath.
