Yasmin Hernandez Art
Lolita Centenario, (Lolita Lebrón), 2019
Gold and white ink on black cardstock
9x6 inches (unmatted/ unframed)
Hand drawn original portrait with metallic gold and white inks on black card stock. Lolita Lebrón dedicated her whole life to the liberation of Puerto Rico. 2019 marks the centennial of her birth.
Working on black backgrounds is something I began in 2009 in honor of Vieques’ bioluminescent bay and that took on new meaning after living through Hurricanes Irma and Maria and their dark aftermath.
This Land: Borikén
The image of the art with the valley is the view outside my studio and where I live and work in this northwestern corner of Borikén. I include it to give a sense of the environment in which I create and of the land that has served as my greatest teacher. I also show the artwork in my hand to give you a sense of scale/ size of the image.
Yasmin Hernandez is a Brooklyn-born and raised artist who rematriated to her ancestral homeland of Borikén in 2014, where she is still based.
