Yasmin Hernandez Art
Lolita Guanin, 2019
Gold ink on black cardstock
5 x 7 inches

Hand drawn with metallic inks on black card stock.  Guanin is the golden medallion worn by caciques, made of a gold/ copper alloy. This portrait of Puerto Rican Revolutionary ancestor Lolita Lebrón is  part of a series honoring warriors of these islands.  It incorporates design elements from renditions of Atabey as seen in Utuado's Caguana Ceremonial Park and spirals referencing water and fertility. Lolita Lebrón was a leader of the Puerto Rican Nationalist Party and a militant in the liberation struggle who served twenty-five years as a political prisoner in the United States.
