Yasmin Hernandez Art
Julia Guanin, 2019
Gold ink on black cardstock
5 x 7 inches

Hand drawn with metallic inks on black card stock.  Guanin is the golden medallion worn by caciques, made of a gold/ silver/ copper alloy. It is also the name assigned to this metal, considered more precious than gold alone. This portrait of Puerto Rican Revolutionary ancestor Julia de Burgos is  part of a series honoring warriors of these islands.  It incorporates design elements from renditions of Atabey as seen in Utuado's Caguana Ceremonial Park and concentric circles representing the sun, the moon and the orbits of planets and stars around our north star. Julia de Burgos is Puerto Rico's most famed poet, a feminist and liberationist whose work was eons beyond her time.  She was also a member of the Puerto Rican Nationalist Party.

Black Backgrounds have been part of my creative practice since 2009 in honor of Vieques’ bioluminescent bay which took on new meaning after living through Hurricanes Irma and Maria and their dark aftermath.
