Yasmin Hernandez Art
Betances Guanin, 2019
Gold ink on black cardstock
5 x 7 inches
(original artwork)

Hand drawn with metallic inks on black card stock.  Guanin is the golden medallion worn by caciques, made of a gold/ silver/ copper alloy. It is also the name assigned to this metal, considered more precious than gold alone. This portrait of Puerto Rican Revolutionary ancestor Ramón Emeterio Betances is  part of a series honoring warriors of these islands. Betances was an Afro-Boricua, also of Dominican descent, a physician, abolitionist and leader of the September 23rd, 1868 revolution El Grito de Lares.

Black Backgrounds have been part of my creative practice since 2009 in honor of Vieques’ bioluminescent bay and that took on new meaning after living through Hurricanes Irma and Maria and their dark aftermath.
